The Drink of the Summer, the Batanga

The Drink of the Summer, the Batanga

In the beginning of the summer I saw this post from the Martha Stewart website about the drink of the summer being a Batanga.  They said many mixologists agree and NYC mixologists do not mess around. We have many interesting and delicious bars in New York.  (my local two Blue Print and Leyenda)

I have never heard of the Batanga but I am always looking for a new cocktail to try. They called this drink refreshing and a classic. What did I like most about it? It has 3 ingredients, so simple. I tried it out and also had family members try it. We all agreed, it is refreshing and has some kick to it. If you like margaritas (tequila and salt) you will like this.

A little quick history lesson. This drink was originally created by Don Javier Delgado Corona, the owner of the iconic La Capilla bar in Tequila, Mexico.

RECIPE:

  1. Grab a cocktail glass, I like to use a classic cocktail glass (short) and swish some ice around it to cool it off.
  2. Use a wedge of lime to coat the rim of the glass.
  3. Dip the rim in salt. (if you have margarita salt handy which I did then that's perfect, if not table salt will do or skip it if you don't like a salt rim)
  4. Squeeze the juice of 1/2 lime into the glass. I use a handheld lemon / lime squeezer which I absolutely recommend. It makes sure you get all the juice. I love these so much, I bought one for my mom's house where I spend alot of time.
  5. Fill the glass with one large cube (or a bunch of regular cubes)
  6. Add 2 ounces of blanco Tequila. I used Don Julio.
  7. Top with Coca-Cola to the top of the glass. I tried this recipe 3 times using different cokes; Mexican Coke-Cola, Boylans Cane Cola, and Olipop Cola
  8. And as recommended to add some kick and honor Don Javier, stir with the same knife you used to cut the lime.

Hope you try this and like it. If you do let me know what you think!

Slainte!

Tracey
